Project K-Nect, a pilot project in North Carolina using smartphones to improve math skills of at-risk secondary students began in the 2007-08 school year. Project partners include the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction and Digital Millennial Consulting. Qualcomm's Wireless Reach Initiative grant provides the phones and service free of charge to students and their schools.
The project aligns digital content with teacher lesson plans and incorporates collaborative learning as well as independent exploration. Project results have shown an increase in student achievement for two consecutive years as indicated on state exams. Based on the successful implementation of this project, additional grant money has been provided, by the U.S. Department of Defense Education Activity, to extend the program to all Algebra I students.
